A run of French classics that Joel pulled from a single estate box — Balzac’s Le Lys dans la Vallée, a couple of Corneille tragedies, a Polyeucte, and a handful whose spines have worn past legibility. Most date to the mid-1800s, bound in the calf and marbled paper of the period, and every one of them has the honest wear of a book that was actually read: cracked hinges, a little crumbling leather at the headcaps, the occasional pressed flower forgotten between pages. Nobody’s buying these to complete a scholarly set. They’re for the shelf, the side table, the mantel — the warm brown weight that makes a room look like someone in it thinks.
